Inlays, Onlays, Overlays, Veneers, and Dental Crowns

Inlays, onlays, overlays, and veneers are all dental restorative treatments used to restore damaged teeth and improve esthetics. An inlay is a restoration made of either porcelain, composite resin or other durable tooth-colored materials. An onlay is a larger restoration that covers the missing surface of a tooth including at least one cusp. An overlay is a veneer-like covering that adheres directly to the full biting surface of the tooth and partially missing walls. Veneers are thin coverings that are adhered to the front surface of a tooth to mask discolorations or minor damage. These treatments are all different from a crown, which is a larger restoration that covers the entire tooth, including the cusps and all tooth walls.

Inlays, onlays, overlays, veneers, and crowns are all custom-fitted and bonded or cemented to the tooth depending on the material used to fabricate the design. These options are durable and provide protection while restoring the shape and strength of a damaged tooth. They are a good choice for improving the look of a patient’s teeth and protecting them from further damage.
